The Role of Mauricio Pochettino In The Development Of England Team
In January 2013, Southampton sacked manager Nigel Adkins and replaced him with an unfamiliar stranger figure and had angered fans.
“What does he know about our game? What does he know about the Premier League? What does he know about the dressing room? Does he speak English? “Asked former Southampton manager Lawrie McMenemy.
As it happens, Adkins’s replacement does not speak English. But five years later, Mauricio Pochettino was the best figure to ever influence the England national team in a generation.
If the England team wins the World Cup next summer, then Pochettino deserves praise. Of the 28 players who made their debut in the English national team since Pochettino was present in the Premier League, half have been coached by the Argentinean manager at Southampton or Tottenham.
11 of them, players like Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Adam Lallana, Eric Dier and Nathaniel Clyne, underwent a debut when Pochettino coached them. While dealing with The Saints and Spurs, Pochettino inherited a team of talented players from England, and he believes England can be as successful as Spain if its young players are given the opportunity and guidance.
This commitment became the point of awakening of the players of The Three Lions. Pochettino’s first appointment was to make left-back Danny Rose undergo his debut in the national team, and it came true. Ross Barkley of Everton is keen to work with Pochettino because he believes the coach will improve himself and boost his declining international career.
Spurs may not be able to offer England players the same salary as at Chelsea or Arsenal, but as long as the responsible Pochettino they can offer an opportunity to undergo debut on the national team.
Harry Winks, a 21-year-old playmaker, proves why Pochettino is so important to England. 18 months ago he struggled to play with Spurs, but his manager blocked a loan transfer to Rotherham and told Winks to stay and learn from him.
When the Roy Hodgson squad lacked players for training sessions at Hotspur Way in November 2015, Pochettino recommended Winks to participate. And now he is in the national team. If it’s like that, the England national team deserves to thank Pochettino.
The list of players who have made their England debut thanks to Mauricio Pochettino:
Southampton: Rickie Lambert, Fraser Forster, Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez, Luke Shaw.
Spurs: Harry Kane, Ryan Mason, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier.
After Pochettino left Southampton: Calum Chambers, Nathaniel Clyne, James Ward-Prowse.
